Frequently asked questions

What is rebalancing?

Rebalancing means bringing your investments back to the mix you planned. Different investments grow at different rates, so a 60% equity plan can drift to 70% without you doing anything. You would then be taking more risk than you planned.

How do I choose my target mix?

This calculator does not choose it for you. It works with the mix you enter. The risk profile quiz gives an indicative range for equity and debt, and a SEBI registered adviser can help you decide on a mix that suits your goals.

What is drift, and what is tolerance?

Drift is the gap between your current share and your target, in percentage points. If equity is 70% against a 60% target, it has drifted by 10 points. Tolerance is how much drift you are happy to leave alone, because small drifts may not be worth the cost of acting. It starts at 5 points, and you can change it.

Should I sell, or use new money?

The page shows both, and the choice is yours. Selling and buying gets you there straight away, but selling can trigger capital gains tax and exit loads. New money involves no selling, but you may need a lot of it, and it can take longer.

What does "Don't sell" do?

It keeps a class from being sold in the sell and buy calculation, and the other classes share the rest in proportion to their targets. Real estate starts this way, as you cannot usually sell a small part of a property. Your mix may then not reach the exact target, and the page says so. A "Don't sell" class can still be bought if it is below target.

Should I include the home I live in?

It usually makes sense to leave it out unless it is part of your plan, as it cannot easily be sold to rebalance. Including it can make you look far more invested in real estate than you really are.

Does this include tax and exit loads?

No. These depend on when you bought, your gains and each fund's rules. Check them before selling, as they can reduce what you end up with.

Is this investment advice, and is what I enter saved?

It is not advice. It shows the arithmetic for the mix you chose, and does not say which funds to buy or sell. Your entries are not sent to us. They are saved only in your own browser on this device, and you can remove them with Clear on this page.
