Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need every month after retirement?

It depends on how you live. Start from what your household spends today, remove costs that will stop, such as children's school fees or office travel, and add costs that tend to rise, such as health insurance and medicines.

This calculator helps you list every expense, including the ones that come once in a few years, and shows the monthly and yearly average.

Why does the calculator spread big expenses like a car or renovation over every month?

Large costs that come once every few years are easy to forget, but they are a real part of retirement spending. A ₹10 lakh car every 7 years works out to about ₹11,900 a month.

Spreading them shows the true monthly cost, and the 10-year chart shows the years when you will need a large amount in one go.

What is the difference between needs, wants and luxuries?

Needs are essentials such as food, bills, maintenance and health care. Wants make life comfortable, such as domestic help, eating out and holidays. Luxuries are nice to have, such as overseas trips or a new car.

Your basic budget covers needs, a comfortable budget adds wants, and a dream budget includes everything. Knowing the split shows what you could trim if your savings fall short.

How does inflation change my retirement expenses?

Prices rise every year, so the same lifestyle costs more in future. At 6% inflation, prices roughly double every 12 years.

Enter the years until you retire to see your monthly budget in the money of that year. Health care costs often rise faster than general inflation, so it is worth planning for a higher rate there.

What should I do with this estimate?

Your yearly expense is the starting point for working out how large a retirement fund you need and how to invest it so that it lasts.
