List what you own and owe, who to call and where your papers are, so your family knows where to start.
Nothing you enter leaves your device.
This is an information record, not a will. It does not transfer or decide ownership of anything.
You may also need a will
This record tells your family what exists. A will decides who gets it, and this record does not do that. Some basics about wills in India:
A will can be handwritten or typed, and does not need stamp paper.
You sign it in front of two witnesses, who also sign. They should not be people who receive anything under the will.
Registering a will is optional. It can add a layer of proof, but an unregistered will is valid too.
You can change or replace your will at any time. The latest valid will is the one that counts.
For Muslims, personal law applies, and a will can usually cover only up to one third of the property.
This is general information, not legal advice. For large or complex estates, businesses, property abroad
or family disputes, please speak to a lawyer.
Frequently asked questions
What is a family financial record?
It is a simple list of what you own and owe, who your family should call, where your papers are, and what they should do first. It saves your family from hunting through papers and phones at a difficult time.
It is for information only. It does not decide who receives anything.
Is this record the same as a will?
No. This record does not transfer or decide ownership of anything, and you should not sign it or have it witnessed as if it were a will. It tells your family what exists and where to find it.
A will decides who inherits. For that, please speak to a lawyer. If you already have a will, note where it is kept in this record.
Is my information sent to SoloInvestor?
No. Everything you enter stays in your browser, and the PDF and your saved file are created on your own device. We do not run ads or Google Analytics on this page, and the page tells your browser not to send form data elsewhere.
During your visit, your entries are kept in this browser tab so a refresh does not lose them. They go when you close the tab, or when you press Clear everything.
How do I save it and update it later?
Press Save file to download your record to your device. To update it, come back, press Open saved file and pick that file. Your file is never uploaded. Download a new PDF after every update and replace the old printed copy.
Should I set a password on my saved file?
We recommend it, because the file is a map of your finances. Without a password, anyone who gets the file can read it. If you forget the password, nobody can open the file, including us.
The password protects the saved file only, not the PDF, so keep any PDF or printed copy somewhere safe.
What should I not enter?
Never enter passwords, PINs, OTPs, CVVs, full card numbers, recovery phrases or Aadhaar numbers. Your family does not need them to make a claim. Write where something is kept, not the secret itself.
Where should I keep it, and who should know?
Keep a printed copy somewhere safe, such as with your important papers, and tell one or two people you trust where it is. A record your family cannot find or open is of no use to them. Review it once a year and after big changes, such as a new investment or a new nominee.
Why does the record ask about nominees?
To record the nomination already registered with the bank, fund house or insurer, and to show you where one is missing or you are not sure. A missing nominee can make a claim slower and harder for your family. To change one, contact the institution, as writing it here changes nothing.
Is a will without stamp paper valid in India?
Yes. A will does not need stamp paper. It can be handwritten or typed on plain paper, as long as you sign it and two witnesses sign it in your presence.
Does a will have to be registered?
No, registration is optional. A registered will can be harder to challenge, but an unregistered will that is properly signed and witnessed is also valid.
Who can witness my will?
Any adult of sound mind can be a witness. Avoid anyone who receives something under the will, or their husband or wife, because a gift to a witness can become invalid.
Is a nominee the same as a legal heir?
Not always. A nominee is usually the person a bank or fund house pays the money to, but depending on the asset and the law, they may have to hold it for the legal heirs. A will makes clear who you want to inherit.
