What is a SEBI Registered Investment Adviser (RIA)?
A SEBI Registered Investment Adviser is an individual or firm registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013 to give investment advice for a fee. Because they are paid directly by you and not through product commissions, their advice is meant to be in your interest.
How do I check if an investment adviser is registered with SEBI?
Search for the adviser on this page by name, city, state or pin code and check the registration number (it starts with INA) and validity. You can also cross-check the number on the SEBI website. Be careful with anyone who cannot share a valid registration number.
How much do SEBI registered investment advisers charge?
For individual and HUF clients, SEBI caps adviser fees. Under the fixed-fee model the limit is ₹1.51 lakh a year per family, and under the assets-under-advice model it is 2.5% of the assets advised a year. Fees are agreed in writing before advice is given.
What is the difference between an investment adviser and a mutual fund distributor?
A distributor is paid commission by the fund house, which is built into the higher expense ratio of regular plans. An investment adviser charges you a fee directly, cannot earn distribution commission from you, and can recommend lower-cost direct plans.
Can an investment adviser guarantee returns?
No. SEBI does not allow investment advisers to promise assured or guaranteed returns. If someone guarantees returns or asks you to share your trading login, treat it as a red flag and report it to SEBI through the SCORES portal.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between direct and regular mutual fund plans?
Both plans of a scheme hold the same portfolio and are run by the same fund manager. A regular plan includes distributor commission in its expense ratio, while a direct plan does not, so a direct plan has a lower expense ratio and a higher NAV over time.
What is TER (Total Expense Ratio) in mutual funds?
TER is the yearly cost of running a mutual fund, shown as a percentage of the money you have invested. It is deducted from the fund every day, so it reduces your returns without appearing as a separate charge. SEBI sets maximum limits and fund houses publish their TER regularly.
How much can I save by switching to direct plans?
The expense ratio of a regular plan is often 0.5% to 1.5% a year higher than its direct plan. On an investment of ₹10 lakh, a 1% difference is about ₹10,000 every year, and the gap grows as your investment grows. Add your funds above to see your own numbers.
Is it worth paying an adviser fee to invest in direct plans?
It depends on how much you have invested. Distributor commission grows with your portfolio, while an adviser's fixed fee does not. For larger portfolios, direct plans plus an adviser fee often cost less than regular plans. This calculator compares both options for your funds.
Are there taxes or charges when switching from a regular to a direct plan?
Yes, switching is treated as selling the regular plan and buying the direct plan, so capital gains tax and exit load may apply. Many investors start new SIPs in direct plans first and move older units once they are past the exit-load period or when the tax impact is lower.

Frequently asked questions
What is an investor risk profile?
A risk profile describes how much investment risk suits you, based on how you react to ups and downs, how much loss your finances can absorb and what your goals need. It helps decide how much of your money should go into growth assets like equity versus steadier ones like debt.
SEBI registered investment advisers must assess your risk profile before recommending any investment.
What are risk tolerance, risk capacity and risk required?
Risk tolerance is your comfort with seeing the value of your investments fall. Risk capacity is how much loss you can actually afford, based on your income, savings, dependants and time horizon. Risk required is how much risk your goals need to be met.
The quiz asks 8 questions each on tolerance and capacity, and 5 on the risk your goals require.
How is my risk profile calculated?
Each answer carries a score, and the scores give you a band from Very Low to Very High for tolerance, capacity and risk required. The lower of your tolerance and capacity bands is combined with your required band to place you in one of five profiles: Very Conservative, Conservative, Moderate, Aggressive or Very Aggressive.
Each profile comes with an indicative equity and debt range, for example 30% to 60% equity for a Moderate investor. These ranges are common rules of thumb, not regulatory limits.
What if my goals need more risk than I can handle?
The quiz will flag a gap. Taking on more risk than you can bear is not the answer, because a large fall could force you to sell at the wrong time. Instead, close the gap by saving more each month, giving your goal more time or scaling the goal back.
It will also point out when your comfort with risk and your ability to take it are far apart, which is worth discussing with an adviser.
How often should I check my risk profile?
Review it at least once a year, and whenever your life changes in a big way, such as a new job, marriage, a child, a large purchase or nearing retirement.
This quiz is a quick self-check. For a full assessment, share your PDF report with a SEBI registered investment adviser, who can look at your complete financial situation.
Privacy
Privacy policy
SoloInvestor works without an account or sign-up. Here is what happens to the information you enter.
Effective 24 October 2026.
How we handle your information
What does this privacy policy cover?
This policy explains what information SoloInvestor handles when you use soloinvestor.in, including the adviser search, the cost saving calculator and the risk profile quiz, and what we do and do not do with it.
In short: you do not need an account, we do not ask for your contact details, and we do not store your searches or quiz answers. If you allow it, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which tools are used. SoloInvestor is free to use and is supported by ads served by Google, which uses cookies as explained below.
Do I need to create an account or share personal details?
No. Every tool on SoloInvestor works without signing up or logging in. We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number, PAN or bank details to use the site.
What happens to what I type in the adviser search?
The name, city, state or pin code you enter is sent to our server only to find matching advisers and return the results. Your search is not linked to you and is not saved by the app.
The adviser details you see come from the public register of investment advisers published by SEBI. We do not collect them from you.
Is my mutual fund information stored when I use the cost saving calculator?
No. Only the name of the fund you pick is sent to our server to look up its expense ratios. Any amounts you enter are used for the calculation inside your browser and are not sent to us.
What happens to my risk profile quiz answers?
Your answers are sent to our server once, when you finish the quiz, so they can be scored. The result is sent back to your browser and the answers are not stored or logged.
While you are taking the quiz, your progress is kept in your own browser tab so a refresh does not lose it. It is cleared when you finish, start again or close the tab.
Is the name I enter on the risk profile report saved?
No. The name is optional. If you add one, it is used only to print on your PDF report and is not stored or logged.
If you share the report using your device's share option, it goes straight from your device to the app you choose, such as WhatsApp or email, and that app's own privacy terms apply.
Does SoloInvestor use cookies?
SoloInvestor's own tools do not need cookies. Two kinds of cookies from Google may be used on the site:
Google Analytics cookies, only if you click Accept on the cookie banner. They help us count visits and see which pages and tools are used. If you click Decline, Google Analytics is not loaded at all. You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
Advertising cookies, used by Google and its advertising partners to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad and measure how ads perform.
Apart from that, the only things saved in your browser are your cookie choice, your quiz progress (for that tab only) and whether you turned the quiz sounds on or off.
You can block or delete cookies from your browser settings at any time. The site will keep working, though ads may become less relevant to you.
What does Google Analytics record?
If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics records the pages you visit, how you reached the site (for example from a Google search), your approximate location (city or country), your device and browser type, links you follow to other websites, and a few actions: opening an adviser's details, picking a fund in the cost saving calculator, starting and finishing the risk profile quiz, and saving or sharing the PDF report.
It does not receive what you type in the adviser search, the funds or amounts you enter, your quiz answers, your risk profile or the name on your report. We see this information only as totals and trends, not as a record of what any one person did.
Google processes this data under its own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy). You can also block Google Analytics on every site with Google's opt-out browser add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).
How does Google use my information to show ads?
Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on SoloInvestor. Google's advertising cookies let it and its partners show you ads based on your visits to SoloInvestor and other websites.
These ads are chosen by Google, not by SoloInvestor. We never share your adviser searches, fund choices or quiz answers with Google for advertising.
To learn more, see how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
How can I opt out of personalised ads?
You can turn off personalised ads from Google at any time in My Ad Center (myadcenter.google.com). You can also opt out of personalised ads from many other ad companies at www.aboutads.info/choices.
If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will not be based on your browsing.
What technical information is processed when I visit the site?
Like any website, our hosting server and network providers receive standard technical details needed to deliver pages and keep the site secure, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time of the request. This is used only to run and protect the site.
Google also receives information from your browser when it loads the site's font from Google Fonts, when it serves ads and, if you accept analytics cookies, through Google Analytics, as described above. Google's own privacy policy applies to that information.
Do you share or sell my information?
No. We do not sell, rent or trade information about our visitors, and we do not pass your searches, quiz answers or report details to advertisers or anyone else. We do not store them in the first place.
Advertising partners such as Google collect information directly through their own cookies when ads load, as explained above, and handle it under their own privacy policies.
We may disclose limited technical information only if required to do so by law.
How does SoloInvestor earn money without using my data?
SoloInvestor is free for users. It is funded only by ads served by Google, commissions from affiliate links to products, and voluntary donations from users who want to support the site. None of these depend on us collecting, storing or selling your personal information. The only analytics we look at are visit totals and trends from Google Analytics, and only from visitors who accept analytics cookies.
If you click an affiliate link, the partner site may use its own cookies to record that you came from SoloInvestor. If you make a donation, your payment is handled by the payment provider you use, and we receive only what is needed to confirm it.
What about links to adviser websites and email addresses?
When you open an adviser's website or send them an email from SoloInvestor, you leave our site. Anything you share with the adviser is between you and them, and is covered by their own privacy practices, not this policy.
How is my information kept secure?
The site is served only over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and it is built to collect as little as possible in the first place. While we take reasonable care, no website or internet connection can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Is SoloInvestor meant for children?
No. SoloInvestor offers information on investing and is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
Will this policy change?
We may update this policy when the site changes or new features are added. Any update will be posted on this page with a new effective date, so please check back from time to time.
How can I contact you about privacy?
If you have any questions about this policy or how SoloInvestor handles information, email us at contact@soloinvestor.in.
Please do not send passwords, OTPs, bank details or other sensitive documents by email.
Terms
Terms and conditions
SoloInvestor is a free, independent information tool, not an adviser. Please read these terms before using it.
Effective 24 October 2026.
Terms of use
Who do these terms apply to?
These terms apply to anyone who visits or uses soloinvestor.in, including the adviser search, the cost saving calculator and the risk profile quiz. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use SoloInvestor.
What does SoloInvestor offer?
SoloInvestor is a free set of tools to help investors in India make better-informed choices: a searchable directory of SEBI registered investment advisers, a calculator that compares the cost of regular and direct mutual fund plans, and a self-assessment quiz that gives an indicative risk profile.
Features may be added, changed or removed at any time without notice.
Is anything on SoloInvestor investment advice?
No. Everything on SoloInvestor is general information and education only. It is not investment, financial, tax or legal advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any product or to engage any particular adviser.
Before making an investment decision, consult a SEBI registered investment adviser or another qualified professional who can consider your full situation.
Is SoloInvestor connected to SEBI or the advisers listed?
No. SoloInvestor is an independent website. It is not run by, affiliated with or endorsed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), any mutual fund house, or any adviser listed on the site.
An adviser appearing in our search results is not a recommendation or a rating. Names of regulators, fund houses and firms are used only to describe the information shown.
How is SoloInvestor funded?
SoloInvestor does not charge users anything, and it is not paid by any adviser, mutual fund house, bank or other financial institution to list, rank or promote anyone. This keeps the adviser search, the cost comparison and the risk profile quiz neutral.
The site is supported only by ads served by Google, commissions from affiliate links to products, and voluntary donations from users. Affiliate links never change the order of advisers in search results or the numbers in our calculators, and donating does not unlock any extra features.
Does SoloInvestor endorse the ads shown on the site?
No. Ads on SoloInvestor are selected and served by Google, not by us, and showing an ad is not an endorsement or recommendation of the product, service or company advertised.
If an ad offers investment advice, tips or products, check that the provider is registered with SEBI before you engage with them. Any dealings you have with an advertiser are solely between you and them.
How accurate is the adviser information?
Adviser details are taken from SEBI's publicly available register of investment advisers and are updated periodically, so they may not reflect the latest changes such as new registrations, cancellations or updated contact details. Some details, such as phone numbers, may be hidden until the adviser confirms they can be shown.
Always verify an adviser's registration directly on the SEBI website before engaging or paying them.
How reliable are the cost saving and risk profile results?
The cost saving calculator uses published expense ratios and the figures you enter to produce an estimate. Actual costs and returns depend on market movements, fee changes, taxes, exit loads and other factors, so your real outcome will differ.
The risk profile quiz is a simple self-assessment based on your answers. It gives an indicative result only and is not a substitute for a proper risk assessment done with a SEBI registered investment adviser.
How may I use the site?
You may use SoloInvestor for your own personal, lawful, non-commercial purposes. You must not copy, scrape or bulk download the adviser directory or other data, use it to send unsolicited messages, try to disrupt or overload the site, or attempt to access parts of it that are not meant to be public.
We may block access for anyone who misuses the site.
What about links to adviser websites and other sites?
SoloInvestor links to adviser websites and email addresses so you can contact them. We do not control those sites or services and are not responsible for their content, offers, fees or privacy practices. Any arrangement you make with an adviser is solely between you and them.
Who owns the content on SoloInvestor?
The design, text, calculators, quiz and code of SoloInvestor belong to SoloInvestor. Public data from SEBI and mutual fund disclosures remains subject to the terms of its original source. You may share links to our pages and your own downloaded reports, but you may not republish the site or its content as your own.
Does SoloInvestor guarantee the site will be available and error-free?
No. SoloInvestor is provided free of charge on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We do not promise that the site will always be available, uninterrupted or free of errors, or that any information or result is complete, current or suitable for your purpose.
Is SoloInvestor liable for decisions I make?
To the fullest extent permitted by law, SoloInvestor and the people behind it are not liable for any loss or damage, direct or indirect, arising from your use of the site, your reliance on any information or result shown, your dealings with any adviser, or the site being unavailable.
You are responsible for your own financial decisions.
Which law applies to these terms?
These terms are governed by the laws of India.
Can these terms change?
Yes. We may update these terms as the site evolves. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. Continuing to use SoloInvestor after a change means you accept the updated terms.
How can I contact you about these terms?
For any questions about these terms, email us at contact@soloinvestor.in.
